Wastewater Treatment Plant

In the 1990s, Salem Township took steps to preserve the rural character of our township by setting aside a limited parcel of property for future development surrounding the M-14/Gotfredson Road interchange. This area became known as the Urban Service District (USD) and has been part of our Master Plan for decades.

We initially wanted to pursue municipal sewer service for the USD through a connection to the Ypsilanti Community Utilities Authority (YCUA) regional system. However, Superior Township, which was one of the jurisdictions through which the sanitary sewer pipe would run, vehemently opposed the idea. As a result, Salem Township finds it necessary to seek a permit through the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and construct its own small-scale wastewater treatment facility.

The wastewater treatment facility also will help create housing opportunities for residents and more funding for local schools and other important services. The new housing will be located in Plymouth Canton Community Schools, which will give the school district a needed influx of new students and additional per-pupil funding to strengthen its curriculum for all students.

It’s also important to note that any new wastewater treatment facility must meet strict state and environmental requirements before being built and will always be monitored during its operation. EGLE is focused on protecting people and the environment before, during and after the construction of this facility.

Once fully operational, Salem Township’s wastewater treatment facility will reclaim almost a million gallons of water a day, helping protect people’s lives and safeguard our environment.
