The Van Fossen family moved to Salem Township in 1974. Prior to beginning her service to Salem residents in 1992, Marcia was on the University of Michigan School of Nursing Pediatric Faculty, worked as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and a Registered Nurse. She has won election to a Salem Township Board position in the last five township elections. Marcia was first elected as Salem Township Clerk in 1992 and served in that position for twelve years until being elected to the Township Trustee position in 2004 and 2008.
Communicating with, listening and involving all citizens in decisions that affect residents identified health, safety and welfare needs have been an important goal for Marcia’s service to the Community. Her public service includes, but not limited to, serving as the Salem Township Fleming Creek Representative, the Township representative to the Rouge River Watershed group, a member of the Police Committee, the Washtenaw Michigan Township Association’s representative to the County Digital Inclusion Task Force and the County Private Wastewater Treatment Ordinance Task Force; and a member of the Washtenaw County Historical Consortium as well as various other committees assigned by the Township Board. She also received the International Institute of Municipal Clerk Certification while serving as Township Clerk.
Community service includes serving as the Vice President of the Salem Area Historical Society, a member of Friends of the Salem/South Lyon Library, a member of the Great Lakes Rock Garden Society, Salem Community Events, Washtenaw County Farm Bureau, and the Worden Extension Group. She continues to assist occasionally with 4H and Boy Scout events.
Marcia continues to perform the duties of Township Trustee and appreciates the opportunity to serve the residents where open communication with Salem Township residents remains a must for her.
